A Message from the Principal

Welcome to the Kendall Public School web site.

At Kendall P.S., the education of students is seen as a partnership between parents, staff and students. Our Welfare Policy states the responsibilities and rights of these three groups in achieving effective learning and good discipline. Parents, staff and students view their school as a place of unparallel natural beauty, quality learning and a long and proud tradition in the performing arts and sport. It is a place where the culture of the school is built on the four pillars of respect, learning, care and achievement. We are extremely proud that the parent bodies and local businesses are supportive of the school and work hard to improve the learning outcomes and environment for their children.

Should your child attend Kendall Public School you can be assured that they will be supported in a caring, friendly and safe environment. Combined with a quality learning environment we believe our students are being well equipped for the rapidly changing world in future years.

History of the school

On the 1st of October 1874 a provisional school was established at Camden Haven (now Kendall) and Miss Jane Logan was appointed the first teacher. Miss Logan was the 19 year old daughter of a local resident. The original school building was constructed of split slabs and measured 20 feet by 12 feet (5m x 3m). Enrolment was 29. Henry Kendall (the noted poet) was secretary of the school board but resigned in 1878.

One of the earlier school buildings, now used for administrationThe first permanent school building was erected in 1880 at a cost of 400 pounds. It was a school room joined to a teacher’s residence. The school in 1880 was still provisional but in September of that year Camden Haven became a public school under teacher Nathaniel Gorett.

In 1890 the name of the school changed from Camden Haven to Kendall Public School. A new building was added in 1891, however by 1914 this building was overcrowded with 97 pupils enrolled and 85 in regular attendance. The arrival of the railway in 1914 aggravated the accommodation situation. So in 1915 the school room was extended, so that 2 classrooms could be opened up into one large room for assemblies.

An important development at this time was the pressure for secondary education. In 1915 the Wauchope Council requested the Department to raise the status of the school to become a Central School. This request was denied and students were forced to attend Taree by train. The first secondary class was formed in 1939.

In 1943 Kendall Public School became Kendall District Rural School with programs that emphasized rural skills and knowledge. There were 86 students in the secondary department and 100 students in primary with 2 teachers.

School buildings and paved play areaIn the early 60’s attendance began to gradually move upwards to approximately 180 students. To accommodate the growing enrolments new buildings were erected. In 1970 a $200,000 Secondary Department complex was built. It consisted of 3 classrooms, a wood work room, Home Science room and various administrative and storerooms.

It was around this time that the school became known as Kendall Central School. The Central School flourished and enrolments grew beyond 900 until the decision was made to establish a separate secondary school named Camden Haven High School. Camden Haven High School began operations in 2000 and the Kendall Central School became Kendall Public School in that same year. Refurbishment of the secondary rooms then took place at a cost of $4,000,000. Today Kendall Public School has the most up to date facilities for all students to enjoy.

P & C

In all schools the P & C always plays a vital role in the education of its students. Our P & C works in close co-operation with the principal and teachers and assist in providing the wonderful amenities that are on offer at the school.

Red mailboxWe invite all parents to become actively involved in the school whether it be through P& C participation, the canteen, classroom helper or assisting with transport. Being involved keeps you more aware of what’s happening at the school.

Throughout the year the P& C conducts a number of fundraising events, which in turn provides new amenities or assists in allowing students to participate in the many programs that operate in the school. For instance the P& C heavily subsidses participation in the Life Education program, a program that is so valued by the school community. Other responsibilities include promotion of the school, safety issues, and support to parents.

P& C meetings are held on the first Monday of every month during the term and are held in the staff room. Dates and agenda items are advertised in the school newsletter.
