School Parliament

At Kendall Public School we believe our leadership programs link strongly with learning about citizenship and processes which involve democracy. Programs can assist all students to learn about and exercise the rights and responsibilities of participating in a community that values social justice. Our school parliament provides excellent opportunities for students to apply their learning in decisions that affect them in their school environment. All students have the right to develop and demonstrate leadership skills. The school parliament will be more sustainable if it is supported by students, parents, teachers, the school and the local community. The school parliament is an important strategy for promoting equity, including gender equity.

Anticipated Outcomes

Students will be provided with opportunities to develop skills in:

  • Active and reflective listening
  • Critical and creative thinking
  • Communication and negotiation in oral and written form
  • Mediation and dispute resolution
  • Problem solving and decision making
  • Goal planning and action planning
  • An increased sense of pride and ownership in their school

School Parliament meets twice per term and Stage 2 and Stage 3 students attend each sitting. If a student is elected as a parliamentary minister he or she must follow all school rules, demonstrate exemplary behaviour, wear correct school uniform and be prepared to spend their own time working around the school.

Additional activities

These programs are dependent upon staff and student interest and parental support. All students have the opportunity of participating in any of the following activities.

Choir

The school has a long and proud tradition of excellence in music. The school has a number of choirs for all students (K-6). It also includes participation in the prestigious Primary Proms at the Sydney Town Hall.

Dance

Students may participate in the Dance group. This group trains every Tuesday and Wednesday after school and participates in local dance competitions.

UNSW Australian Schools Competitions

Every year students from Kendall Public School participate in competitions run by the University of New South Wales. The competitions include science, computer, English maths, writing and spelling. Results are based on state wide attainments and students are awarded a distinction, credit or participation for their efforts

Public Speaking

Students in Years K-6 are given the opportunity to participate in Public Speaking competitions organised within our school and the region.

Tournament of Minds

Students in Years 5-6 have the opportunity to compete in the Tournament of Minds. Students are given problems which they are invited to solve using creative and innovative planning.

Excursions

Various excursions are organised for all students K-6 throughout the year. The major Stage 3 excursion alternates between Canberra (odd years) and Bathurst (even years). All excursions are closely linked to curriculum and are seen as an active form of learning.

Sport

All children from Kindergarten to Year Six participate in a regular sport and fitness program. The school conducts very successful and enjoyable swimming, cross country and athletics carnivals with representative teams travelling to district carnivals. Kendall Public School has entered a variety of teams in the NSW Primary School Sports Association Knockout Competitions over the years including rugby league, cricket, soccer, touch football, tennis and netball. In 2006 we entered a side in the Paul Kelly Cup (Australian Rules).

2 Way FM

Each term students conduct a radio program through community radio 2 Way FM. School news and matters of interest in our community are discussed on the program.
